K1T 230kV Water Structure Replacements

The Project

The project consisted of replacing ten (10) D17-1 Gulfport Tangent structures with new D17-1 Gulfport Tangent structures under energized conditions and utilizing screw pile foundations. The work was carried out west of Tantallon, Sk., in the Qu’Appelle Valley, and required frozen conditions as the structures were located in and adjacent to wetlands.

The Challenge

  • Limited access requiring access matting and river crossings.
  • Frozen or dry ground conditions were throughout construction to comply with permits and to ensure the safe operation of equipment and worker’s safety.
  • Extreme cold conditions during construction. Crew members worked diligently to complete the project while temperatures reached -30C to -40C. Stringent safety measures and procedures were developed and implemented to prevent incidents during winter months.

Specialized Work Methods

  • Allteck developed unique and specialized work methods for the replacement of 230 kV Gulfport structures under energized conditions. The wood poles on the D17-1 Gulfport structures are angled, and therefore, conventional work methods were not practical.
  • Robotic Arms and Barehand work procedures were required for 230 kV.
