507463 Red Deer – New 423L

The Project

The project included constructing and commissioning a new 138 kV transmission line, 423L, from N.E. Lacombe Substation 212S to Ellis Substation 332S, covering approximately 13.5 km of single circuit and 2 km of double circuit facilities. A total of one hundred and seven (107) steel monopole structures were installed along with fifty five (55) steel pipe foundations, twelve (12) concrete caisson foundations (2 m–2.5 m diameter), and two (2) wooden structures. The new line was strung with 1033 ASCR Curlew conductor.

 The Challenges

  • Several weeks of extreme cold during construction. Crew members worked diligently to complete the project while temperatures reached -20C to -30C. Stringent safety measures and procedures were developed and implemented to prevent incidents during winter months.

Specialized Work Methods

  • This project was constructed utilizing de-energized methods, using Electrical Bonding & Grounding (EG&B) where required.
  • Helicopter work methods were used for the installation of pulling lines, prior to Allteck stringing over highways and other surface obstacles.
